On October 29, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the second meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates which was held on October 8, 2018, by web conference.

During the meeting, EFSA’s DATA Unit presented “[a]n update on the analysis of occurrence and exposure data on phthalates.” The WG the discussed “[d]ifferent approaches for assessment of dietary exposure to phthalates” as well as “considerations on how to estimate the contribution from (plastic) food contact materials to the overall exposure.”

Further, the WG discussed the expert feedback it received regarding “the screening of literature” for updating EFSA’s scientific opinion on the safety of dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7) for use in food contact plastics. Lastly, the WG addressed “the update of the sections of the draft opinion according to the discussions of the previous WG meeting” as well as “[g]eneral considerations on the scope, content and structure of the opinion.”

The date of the next meeting of the phthalates WG is yet to be decided.
