In an article published on September 24, 2018, the magazine EUWID Verpackung informed that the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) published a call for projects on bio-based packaging. According to BMEL, bio-based materials currently make up less than 1% of the market for plastic food packaging. Thus, the aim of the call is to develop new bio-based plastic packaging for food. Eligible topics within the call are design suitable for recycling, low-migration additives for biogenic packaging, and research into the diffusion properties of relevant organic substances from the materials.

BMEL’s call is based on the results of a study on bioplastic food packaging that the Ministry commissioned in 2016 and that has now been finalized. Project proposals for concept development can be submitted until January 31, 2019, and proposals for industrial collaborative research projects until March 31, 2019.
