On June 4, 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the tenth meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates, which was held on May 13, 2019 by phone conference.

During the meeting, working group members reviewed and discussed summary statistics on the outcome of the public consultation on EFSA’s draft assessment of five phthalates (FPF reported). The meeting placed “a focus on [comments received] regarding the exposure assessment.” Tasks were then distributed to experts, and the WG is to discuss revisions to the draft opinion and answers to the comments in a future meeting. The next WG meeting will be held on June 6-7, 2019 in Parma, Italy.

In its draft opinion, EFSA established a group tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 50 µg/kg body weight (bw) per day for the four phthalates di-butylphthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), butylbenzylphthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7), and di-isononylphthalate (DINP, CAS 28553-12-0). The phthalate di-isodecylphthalate (DIDP, CAS 26761-40-0) was assigned its own TDI of 150 µg/kg bw per day (FPF reported).
