On July 16, 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the sixth meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Recycling Plastics. The meeting was held on June 20-21, 2019, in Zurich, Switzerland. The WG discussed draft scientific opinions on several recycling processes.

The processes for which recommendations for revision were provided include AMB by Bandera technology (EFSA-Q-2018-003755), Marcato by Starlinger DeCON (EFSA-Q-2018-008976), Petman by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2018-008998), Reco-Kavala by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2018-009249), V&T Trade by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2018-0104810), Sharpak Bridgewater by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2019-0010311), Pinaform by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2019-0012612), Ferrarelle by Starlinger viscotec deCON (EFSA-Q-2019-0010913), Texplast by Starlinger iV+ (EFSA-Q-2019-0005814), and Quinn Packaging by EREMA Basic (EFSA-Q-2019-008517). For all these processes, “the revised draft opinion will be scheduled for discussion and possible adoption by the CEP Panel.”

For the processes Veripack Embalajes by Starlinger Decon (EFSA-Q-2019-001497), Poly Recycling by Starlinger iV+ (EFSA-Q-2018-01042), and Poly Recycling by recoSTAR PET FG (EFSA-Q-2018-0100216), the WG identified additional information to be requested from the applicants in order to complete the risk assessments. The scientific evaluation will halt until respective information is submitted; upon receipt, “a new draft opinion will be scheduled for a next WG or plenary meeting.”

Further, the WG “was informed about new mandates on recycling applications that were received by EFSA since the last WG meeting.”

The next meeting will take place in September 2019 (exact date and location not yet announced).
